Desmond Yanamayu, MSW, LISW-S
Philosophy
Desmond Yanamayu created The Black Mental Health Corporation with people of color in mind, after realizing this diverse population experiences challenges and struggles that are unique from many other racial/ethnic groups. Because of this, he wanted to create a space where black people could feel comfortable getting counseling with someone who understands issues specifically related to them. Even still, The Black Mental Health Corporations’ services are open to people of all ethnicities and racial backgrounds as well.
Experience
Desmond completed his undergraduate degree at Youngstown State University, and received his Masters of Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh. His experience is diverse working with many populations, from adolescents to geriatrics, providing both counseling and case management. Because Desmond combines his work experience with his own life lessons, it allows him to provide a well rounded counseling experience to his clients.
Style
Desmond’s clinical style encompasses a mixture of practical solutions and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, with guided methods of introspection and self-awareness techniques. Using a keen listening ear, Desmond believes the therapist’s primary role is to act not as an instructor, but, rather as guide, to help each client reach their highest level of personal growth and their own place of self-discovery.
